General Breed Information

The Kyi-Leo is a dog breed that was created because of the accidental mating of a Maltese and a Lhasa Apso during the 1950s. The breeding was continued for the next 20 years, with Harriet Linn being responsible for creating the standard and setting the name. In 1972, the breed was established. "Kyi" is a Tibetan term that means dog, while "Leo" is Latin for lion. This breed is recognized by various organizations such as the Continental Kennel Club, National Kennel Club, American Rare Breed Association, American Pet Registry Inc., and the Kyi-Leo Club.

These dogs have a height of 8 to 12 inches and a weight that ranges from 9 to 14 pounds. Kyi-Leos are small dogs that are well-boned and with good muscle tone. The head of these dogs is covered with long hair, and they have whiskers and a beard. The eyes of these dogs are small and dark-coloured, and they have a small, black nose. Their teeth meet in a scissors bite. The coat of these dogs is thick and long, and may be either slightly wavy or straight. These dogs are commonly black and white, although there are some specimens with a silverish-grey and white coat.
